The purpose of the Art Volunteer Program (AVP) is to encourage our elementary school children to appreciate the arts by exposing them to classical and modern art, sculpture and different world cultures. There is something wonderful about sharing great works of art and seeing it through the eyes of a young person. There is much to be taught and more to be learned from the imagination of a child.
The Plymouth Community Arts Council supplies the background information and presentation materials. Each year our participating elementary schools may also borrow three portfolios of prints, which can be housed at their school. The portfolios are rotated each year so that there is a fair distribution of art throughout the district. In addition, there are a number of supplementary portfolios, grade appropriate story portfolios, culture boxes and sculpture units. These are shared by all of the schools throughout the program year, October through May.
The most important ingredient to our young people’s growing appreciation for art is YOU and your enthusiasm! You need not be an expert, but it is guaranteed that you, too, will learn to love art and this program. Information is provided for you within the portfolios from which you can prepare yourself to share the artwork. Remember, just as every piece of art is different; every art volunteer is different and brings his or her own experience to the classroom. Relax and have fun!
Become an Art Volunteer in your school and inspire a young mind. Now in its 55th year, the Art Volunteer Program, generously sponsored by Community Financial Credit Union, welcomes new volunteers to present in area classrooms, organize and update the portfolios and kits and help with administrative work related to the program.
