Dear Friends of Baseline,
As the leaves begin to turn and fall settles in, there’s no better time to gather together for an evening of great songs, good stories and the kind of music that feels right at home at Baseline Folk Society. Please join us on Saturday, October 17 for a special night featuring longtime Baseline performer Rick Pitts as our host and, for the very first time, The Dave Stratford Band as our featured performers. See attached flyer. Rick has been part of the Baseline community for many years as a performer, patron and friend. His love of music began with singing cowboys and an electric-guitar version of “Ghost Riders in the Sky” that caught his imagination as a kid. He eventually convinced his parents that his interest in the guitar was here to stay, and music has been making him happy ever since. His tastes stretch well beyond cowboy songs to rock, country, bluegrass, folk, pop and Motown. That wide-ranging love of music comes through in Rick’s own performances, which blend heartfelt and humorous songs with an easygoing style and, every now and then, a little cowboy giddyup. We're especially excited to welcome The Dave Stratford Band to the Baseline stage for their first full featured performance. Baseline audiences have enjoyed hearing the band during our open mics, and this month we finally get the chance to settle in and enjoy a whole set from them. The Dave Stratford Band performs “songs worth remembering”—songs you may have forgotten you love alongside original music designed to connect with stories, memories and experiences. Their distinctive acoustic sound brings together folk-style vocals, guitars and cello, rhythmic bass and dynamic percussion. Their repertoire reaches from singer-songwriters such as John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot and James Taylor to CCR, The Beatles, Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash. Their original music is just as much a part of their character. Their 2023 album, Making Music Together, includes songs such as “Timberway Man,” “Country Boy Anthem” and their John Denver tribute, “Drink It All In.” The band is also working toward a new release featuring songs including “Boulder Canyon Love Song,” “It’s All Your Fault” and the blues-inspired “Losin’ Blues.” And, of course, the Baseline stage is open to you, too. We’ll have eight 10-minute open mic spots available for the evening. Sign-up will be held from 6:15–6:45 p.m. Newcomers are guaranteed an opportunity to perform. If more than eight performers sign up, we’ll hold a raffle to select the evening’s remaining performers. Anyone whose name is not drawn will receive priority to perform at our next scheduled show. Whether you’re coming to share a song, hear some familiar favorites, discover something new or simply spend an autumn evening with friends, we hope you’ll join us.
