Plymouth, City At The Crossroads
A community partnership sculpture by Vito J. Valdez 2019-2021

Made possible through the Detroit Institute of Arts Partners in Public Art initiative, and funded through the tri-county millage, the sculpture was created by artist Vito Valdez with input from the people of Plymouth.  A true community endeavor, this extraordinary project would have not been possible without these community partners.

Located on the east side of downtown Plymouth adjacent to Kellogg Park and south of the Wilcox House. Our installation is complete!
PROJECT HISTORY: In 2019, the DIA approached the Plymouth DDA and Arts Council with a partnership proposal to create a piece of public art together for our community. Through many meetings, drawings, community survey and historical inquiry, the sculpture became a reality. DIA sculptor Vito Valdez, and fabricator Kristyn Koth continued to work in their studios during the pandemic. We look forward to the debut of this piece in September of 2021 - it is truly a combination of everything Plymouth...our railroad, native roots, Daisy factory bricks, the automobile, and leaves from the City of Trees all play a part in this one of a kind sculpture.

Peter Rockwell
PCAC itself has a 50-year legacy of bringing arts to students and residents in our community.  In 1986, we were involved in an exciting collaborative artist-in-residence program with renown sculptor Peter Rockwell. He created a whimsical menagerie of Italian limestone rock figures, located in Plymouth Township's McClumpha Park. Plymouth-Canton high school students, local art enthusiasts, teachers and families participated in the project on many levels. Although the edges of these outdoor sculptures have softened with over 30 years of climbing and Michigan weather to their credit, most still remain part of the township park landscape. A few have fallen into disrepair and it is our goal to raise funds to repair and restore these pieces to put back on public view throughout the Plymouth community. Phase One will bring 2 smaller pieces indoors at the PCAC to be on display along with news articles, facts and photos from the original installation. In addition we will be working on modifying one of the larger pieces as an outdoor, free-standing piece to be installed in a sculpture garden on the west side of the PCAC's Sheldon Road campus.
