Marilyn Prucka’s quilts are abstract impressions of the landscape around her riverside studio in Monroe. She sees her fiber work as graphic, painterly and sculptural and, at the same time, a source of comfort. The are the comfort of place. Following is Marilyn’s Artist Statement on this exhibition called “Confluence”:
The inspiration of nature pushes my markmaking. I live and work in a rural area along the River Raisin in Monroe. For several years my quilt work has expressed the texture, light and color of the river and its immediate surroundings. I’ve grounded myself by recording this environment in gestural vignettes. In the past year I’ve started to include impressions of the vast corn field across the road from my studio – the river the back yard, the cornfield the front. The impressions from both views now meet.
My quilts are expressionistic fragments of tilted planes, aerial and worm’s-eye views, microscopic or macroscopic imaginings. I’m drawn to the subtleties of light and color by the passage of time, especially as night approaches. I find the River’s breath mesmerizing. That breath is the stir caused by a fish, the wake of cast-off leaves, rain drops and newly hatched water-bugs. It also is the sway of reeds and the flutter of wings – a bird – an insect – my own. I love the sound of rustling leaves, mating calls, a gentle rain, a torrential storm and the grinding and groaning of the ice breaking up. With these images in mind I draw, paint and sculpt the cloth.
Cloth answers an inexplicable daily need to make things with my hands. Some days are artful; others are functional, decorative or any combination. In this exhibit you will find the art of a personal landscape and the comfort of a handcrafted quilt. |
