The Changing Face of Michigan’s Workforce: The Plymouth, Michigan Story

The Plymouth Community Arts Council (PCAC) was awarded the prestigious Michigan Humanities Council grant in November of 2006 for an innovative project under the 2006-07 ‘We Made Michigan…We the People’ theme entitled The Changing Face of Michigan’s Workforce: The Plymouth, Michigan Story. The project is led by the Plymouth Community Arts Council in partnership with community partners and will end in the creation of a unique exhibition that will document the changing meaning of work in people’s lives, with Plymouth as a case study in Michigan’s economy. Apart from the required historical research and compilation of information, the participants will conduct intergenerational oral history interviews of past and present workers and management staff from Plymouth’s many manufacturing companies that have witnessed a huge change with the evolution in global economy. These dynamic oral histories will be transcribed as ‘people’s stories in their own voices’ and will be incorporated into the exhibition label texts. This will truly bring out the essence of the theme of ‘We Made Michigan….We the People.’ Participating youth and artists will be using various artistic media as tools to present their interpretation of the topic that will accompany the informative text panels.

The exhibition will be showcased at the 1600 square-foot exhibit gallery at the Joanne Winkleman Center’s for the Arts and will be open to the public March 5th-27th.

March Exhibit—Kay Rowe

Join us in March for the lively watercolors from Kay Rowe.   A resident of Canton, Kay is an instructor and painter in the medium of transparent watercolor.  Her favorite subjects are from nature, often viewed up close and from an unusual vantage point (“micro-scapes”).   It is her goal to communicate a mood, emotion or sense of place, and to share an appreciation for beauty which exists in objects which might otherwise go unnoticed.

In addition to painting, Kay regularly gives demonstrations and slide lectures to local art clubs, and has participated in many juried shows, one person and group exhibits.

The PCAC exhibit will run March 1-26, Monday-Thursday from 9-5.

Meet the Artist Reception will be held Friday, March 19th 7-9 pm.

All are welcome to attend.
